Fixing Britain's Housing Crisis

Fixing Britain's Housing Crisis

The number of homes being built by private developers is growing significantly, but many now fear the number built by Housing Associations is declining fast.

Is now the time to encourage and support more Housing Associations and Local Authorities to start building affordable homes again?

Saul, hope you and your team are well. The risk is the decline in housing standards being adhered to by private developers with the likes of HQI and LTH compliance being disregarded as unnecessary and costly items. Housing associations are the key to keeping the housing market in check particularly with rapidly raising prices that are not sustainable!

I agree, although I think we are seeing local authorities, in partnership with housing associations, beginning to provide new affordable housing. This is however generally on land already in the local authority's possession. They are unlikely to be able to compete with private developers/investors where the cost of building 'affordable' homes makes the land purchase unviable. Perhaps more work is needed to reduce the cost of procuring affordable housing to enable more competition for land and to encourage long term external investment.

I think we need to encourage pension funds to invest in affordable housing.

Hi Saul, I think we need to support more Housing Associations, we currently do not have enough properties to house all the UK residents. I also feel we have far to many empty properties that could be demolished and reconstructed to house more people and to be built greener and more efficient. We have a huge skill shortage across the UK from Labour, Trades through Production, Design and Commercial. I feel we as a Country are shooting ourselves in the foot by sending skilled illegal immigrants back to their Country of origin. It does not make sense the skills gap is getting bigger by the day. We should instead ensure that we use all resources available to us, ensure that we allow the work force to work legally and this will put more money into our economy and more homes can be built. Kind Regards Harbinder Sangha
