Fix Your Business By Fixing Your HIRING PROCESS
OK, I admit that Borat is not the greatest CEO, HR leader or role model, but we all want to be successful. Right?
Many organizations are suffering. The sad truth is that they are often the victims of their own bad decisions and policies. One of the worst, most costly and avoidable of these is: A BAD HIRING PROCESS.
When you hire the wrong people for the wrong reasons, the results are less than stellar. It can drive your business right into the dumper.
For the last 35 years or so, I've hired - or helped hire - a LOT of people for a variety of businesses large and small, a couple of which I managed or owned. I've made some pretty bad mistakes, and had some very good successes.
Either way, I learned a few things that I hope to share with you today. Feel free to disagree.
FIRST, any organization is only as good as its people. From the CEO to the lowest ranking frontline position, people create results which can be really good or really bad.
SECOND, status quo, standard processes and conventional thinking tend to inform many misguided and costly decisions. Just because you've always done something a certain way is no reason to keep doing it that way. But you have to be open to that new way. And some 'leaders' simply don't like nor will they allow necessary changes.
THIRD, business and government are too often influenced by 'experts' who are highly paid, well-educated, very powerful...and dead flat wrong. What they do isn't working. Believe the results, not the words.

FOURTH, too many businesses often treat people like assets or furniture or equipment. They use terms that dehumanize people like 'talent pipeline' or 'headcount' or 'personnel.' Or 'human resources.' To quote my late mentor, Jim Sirbasku, they "hire 'em in masses; train 'em in classes - and throw 'em out on their a__es." People don't like being treated like that. So, 'people problems' - and failure - are common results.
LAST, a good hiring process can solve many problems. It can reduce turnover, aid in successful promotions, increase retention, boost profits and many other good things. But many 'hiring professionals', leaders in the C-Suite and HR either ignore or are threatened by any significant changes in the hiring process. It ain't working, based on a 50-80% failure rate in new hires. So they keep doing the same things, or do nothing at all.
About 6 years ago, I wrote a #LinkedIn article entitled "How to Hire A PERSON - Not Stereotypes" (https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/how-hire-person-stereotypes-russ-minary/?trackingId=As2ajTRPRqyKRyZ0%2BNfcXw%3D%3D) I believe that the advice and resources in this article will still work just as well today.
But you'll have to try it by putting it into action. My advice is FREE, and worth every penny.
