Fix it forever solution

Fix it forever solution

I love this one! When you're in a stressful situation, it's really easy to make a decision that will get you out of that stress fast. Most of the time, it’s a one-off solution.

I like to approach this with a view of how can I fix it now (even if it's a one-off solution) and also put something in motion that fixes it forever.

I remember a particular conversation around a system implementation, where the dates for which a service was given needed to be added to customer invoices. We noticed that we had some invoices in which the end date of the service was before the start date....

The other person quickly found a solution "I'll ask person X to check this as part of month end and fix any errors". I felt the hair on the back of my neck standing up. My brain instantly went to "I will talk to the system support team to see if they can block us from adding and end date before a start date, or at least generate a warning message asking us if we are sure we want to continue".

Quite the difference in results and resources allocated to this.

Spot on! The reality is however that fix-it forever solutions are implemented mostly when there is no alternative left whatsoever, and until then the good old kicking the can down the road is the preferred option which comes with all the stress, all the non-value adding activities and tasks and frustration
