Five ways to write better emails with data & AI

I recently attended the Digital Summit in Raleigh as a keynote speaker, but before my talk, I had my mind blown during a session by Marketing Guru Jay Schwedelson .

In my last newsletter, we talked about how to get colleagues to open your emails to move your projects along, and today I’m going to share Jay's best email marketing tips to get your CUSTOMERS to open your emails and drive revenue for you and your company.

TIP 1: Move over FOMO, there’s a new acronym in town… FONF

As Jay says, consumers' “Fear of Not First” is significantly influencing their behavior, which you can take advantage of by simply creating a sense of urgency with your communications.

By using language like “Just Dropped,” “Just In,” or “Big Announcement,” your audience will be compelled to open your email to be one of the first to know the latest news.

Don't believe me? Check out the data to back up this claim:

TIP 2: How you start your subject line really matters…

Here Jay says the data shows that starting an email subject line with all Capital letters or a number guarantees a significant open rate increase.

?TIP 3: Brackets are key, who knew?!

What I instinctively thought would be off-putting or spammy seems to actually have data saying the opposite. Using brackets at the beginning of your email subject line increases open rates.

?

TIP 4: The truth is out there and people want more of it

We have become quite a suspicious society, who is constantly wanting to know the "real truth." Check out these open rates when you use words like "True," "Real," and "Actual."?

TIP 5: Let GenerativeAI help you write better emails

For me, it’s our watsonx platform AskIBM that helps me create better content including emails at work. But no matter your “gpt” preference, try the below prompt before sending your next marketing email.

?“I'd like you to review the following email marketing message and provide actionable feedback on how to improve it. Please consider elements like clarity, engagement, call to action (CTA) effectiveness, and overall persuasive power. Additionally, provide at least 5 very specific critiques and test ideas I can try based on what you find from this emailspecifically. And also provide suggestions for improving the subject line provided here as well. ?Subject Line of this email is - PUT SUBJECT LINE HERE!”

There you have it – five tips to help you send better emails that your audience will actually read! Want more? Check out Jay’s full list from his Digital Summit keynote here: https://outcomemedia.com/deck/digital_summit_FINAL.pdf
