When preparing for your next career move, particularly into a new industry or job type, use your resume and LinkedIn profile (and other career documentation) to promote and validate your most relevant professional offerings. Below are five ways that you can help to ensure that your career-branded content attracts and resonates with recruiters and other target audiences.
1) Clarify position relevance
Consider how you can adapt and/or expand on the job titles in your employment history, to better align with your future career plans (e.g. highlighting how your last role included team leadership elements).
2) Reduce technical terms
Avoid (or explain) company/industry-specific terminology that may confuse and even deter audiences, including in job titles, department names and abbreviations - make it easy for the reader to interpret your job relevance.
3) Focus on the key skills
Rather than providing a comprehensive list of professional skills that you have on offer, streamline down to those most relevant for the position and industry - this is also likely to convey your complete understanding of what is required.
4) Show scope of responsibilities
When your ambition is to move up the career ladder, make it clear in your employment history how you've already taken on those more senior-level responsibilities (e.g. how many team members you've managed on a project).
5) Keep content attuned
Be prepared to cull content that is no longer applicable to you and your career plans, such as technical skills and technologies that are job/industry-specific - also evaluate whether to list out all of your career history (is it adding value).
