Five Trends in Education Technology


The EdTech market is on an upward trajectory, with the global e-Learning market set to reach $457. 8 Billion by 2026. This surge in EdTech adoption is influenced by various trends and opportunities that are reshaping the educational industry. In my role as a member of the governing body of Middlesbrough College , I'm always interested in exploring new educational mediums that may become available in the future for the benefit of our students and the community of Teesside.


But firstly, what exactly is EdTech? EdTech, or education technology, encompasses an array of tools and platforms designed to facilitate teaching and learning in the digital age we now live in. This multifaceted field includes online courses, learning management systems (LMS), virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI), and more.


For now let's focus a little further infield and take a look at what top 5 trends I see coming in the year ahead, 2024.


1. Immersive Learning

With immersive technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), students can now step into historical events, explore the intricacies of human anatomy, or conduct virtual science experiments. The potential to provide medical students with a virtual operating room experience is now possible through startup companies such asLabster. The power of immersive technologies lies in their ability to significantly enhance knowledge retention and engagement, providing a richer learning experience for students.


2. Gamification

By incorporating game elements such as points, levels, challenges, and virtual rewards, EdTech platforms have the potential to transform learning from a mundane task into a series of mini-goals and incentives. The significance of gamification in enhancing academic performance, collaboration, and overall student participation shouldn't be underestimated. By integrating gamified elements, learning can become enjoyable but also contribute to tangible educational outcomes.


3. Artificial Intelligence

I see Artificial Intelligence (AI) as becoming the ultimate tool for educators. By automating administrative tasks and providing smart tutoring systems, AI allows teachers to focus on guiding and inspiring students. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying AI is a replacement for teachers but a powerful supplementary tool. With the possible integration of AI-driven solutions, like Google’s Workspace for Education, enhancements in the efficiency of educational processes will likely be seen.


4. Blockchain for Credentialing

Blockchain, once synonymous with cryptocurrencies, is taking the education sector's interest when it comes to security measures. Blockchain can bring transparency, security, and portability to academic certifications. By employing decentralised, tamper-proof ledgers, students can securely share their credentials with employers, reducing fraud risks and streamlining the credential validation process.


5. Smart Content Recommendations

Smart content recommendations powered by advanced algorithms may emerge as an indispensable tool. By analysing individual knowledge levels, interests, and learning styles, EdTech platforms can provide tailored recommendations, making the learning journey not just personalised to individual students but highly engaging with them.


To sum up, the education industry is no doubt set to undergo a sizeable shift and it's showing the potential to offer exciting opportunities for learners and educators in Teesside alike. If we move beyond conventional education, we're presented with an exciting future where education becomes more engaging, personalised, and attuned to the diverse needs of our community in Teesside.
