Five top tips to boost your self-esteem

Five top tips to boost your self-esteem

From 1st to 29th February (yes, it’s a leap year this year!) it is International Boost Your Self Esteem Month! So, let's dive into a topic that's not discussed enough, but deserves the spotlight.

?

The charity “Mind” provides this definition – “Self-esteem is how we value and perceive ourselves. It's based on our opinions and beliefs about ourselves, which can feel challenging to change. We might also think of this as self-confidence."

?

Low self-esteem could be brought on through many different life or work experiences, including feeling pressured to meet unrealistic expectations, for example, through social media or things we read in the news.

Here are five ideas for returning your self-esteem to a healthy level if it needs a bit of a boost!

?

1. Give yourself a challenge.

People with healthy self-esteem are not frightened to take on a challenge or move out of their comfort zone. So why not set small goals or commit to something you have never done before? Have you ever considered volunteering, doing a challenge for charity or just taking up something new? Being a fearless learner will skyrocket your self-esteem.

?

2. Immerse yourself in positivity

Try to recognise negative thoughts as they appear and turn them around quickly. Pay someone a compliment and accept them from others. Think about trying to work towards being a glass half full rather than a glass half empty mindset! Positivity has a habit of multiplying and the more you practice this way of thinking the better you will become at it.

?

3. Prioritise self-care

Self-care is an essential part of your routine to boost self-esteem. Investing time in yourself sends a powerful message to your subconscious that you matter. Consistently getting enough sleep, exercise, water and eating healthily will go a long way to building your physical resilience, positively impacting the way you feel about yourself.

?

4. Recognise and celebrate what you are good at

Crush that little voice in your head, which is a bit self-critical, by writing down everything you are good at and the things that make you happy! This list could relate to work or your personal life, they could be big things or small things. Challenge yourself to write a quick list of 10 things, keep them saved, and add them to them over the coming weeks. A journal or a simple list you keep on your phone could be helpful here. Refer back to the list if you have a bad day to remind yourself of all the fantastic qualities that are unique to you!

?

5. Give your mind a well-deserved break

Thoughts come and go all day long. Some are positive and some negative; give yourself some headspace to help slow thoughts down. Spend some time outdoors, do something you find relaxing or jump on a meditation app. Once your mind is a little calmer, your mood will follow, and you can think more clearly. Once in this space, you will value yourself more and feel more self-confident.
