During my journey as an Entrepreneur in NYC (Just Homestay LLC short term housing for exchange students) I made sure to share with the international students the following suggestions to have a successful stay with a host family:
- Be willing to respect your new environment, be open to learn about your host lifestyle (ask them to share their favorite hobbies with you, maybe you also like to go for a walk in the park, go to the movies (excellent to practice your listening abilities -if you don't speak the local language), or just talk about yourself and your goals during your study programs abroad.
- Try to understand the culture of the city that you landed in (doesn't matter how big or small the city is) your host family opened their doors to welcome you in their home, be considerate.
- Always be positive! Living in a new country can be exciting and challenging, trust your host family’s advices about the community and neighborhood.
- Remember that staying with a host family is a one on one experience, plant a seed of positive experiences, show your host your appreciation towards them and their family. You are representing yourself, your country and your culture.
- Smile and share your pictures of your great times spent during your exchange program abroad (sharing a meal, a family dinner - teach each other a new recipe) create your own story and amazing memories. Life is about the simple pleasures!

9 年Staying with a host family is an experience one can always remember. I remember my Japanese home stay during 2000 in Tokyo ... we are still in touch .. it is a great experience of exchange and sharing. Thanks Wilka Nascimento for this post.

9 年Hi Wilka, remember me with Gazelle Group? I want to comment because I am a host family to 3 girls who attend private upper schools in Baltimore from China. They are lovely and we get along very well and they are most gracious. Also, I have a daughter who is with a host family while serving in the Peace Corp in El Salvador. She follows the guidelines mentioned in your post. Best of luck to you,

9 年Great article! We all have a responsibility to show respect to the destinations and the cultures we visit. It's not expected to completely understand all the nuances and practicalities of each culture we visit, but the locals do expect you to do just a little research, know just a little bit about the culture and think and act responsibly.
