While building my previous startups (and ThinkApps) and mentoring various startups, I had the opportunity to experience over 100 apps/products. Below I am sharing my main tips for anyone looking to build a great tech product:
1. Know your early adopters very well and make the first product for them, in a way that makes them use your product at least a few times a day. To do so map your early adopter behavior onto your product.
2. Some domains (like travel) have a high cost of user acquisition and low returns. Is your product in one such domain? Focus on making the cost of acquisition lower through building virality into your product.
3. Know your Unique Selling Point of your product very well and build that ONE feature giving x3-x5 better experience than anything else out there. Make the USP be the first thing noticeable for the users.
4. Gamification is a great way to engage users. But be careful not to make the gamification on a feature that is used only not so often. Build the gamification on a feature which is used as often as possible and will make them go back to the product.
5. Try not to change the behaviors of users. A great article 'Why behavior change apps fail to change behaviors' for anyone interested to know why so. The way to do this is by mapping the behavior of your early adopters (already mentioned in point 1).
