Five Tips for Finding Your Next Dream Job

Build your network?

You’ve probably heard this before, but I’ll say it again: build your professional network. This is something that you need to start doing long before you are even thinking about looking for a job but it will absolutely pay off in the long run. A strong professional network is invaluable when it comes time to look for your next job. And I don’t mean amassing a large collection of connections on LinkedIn (although those are valuable too). I mean building actual relationships with other professionals in real life. So when it comes time to find your next job, you can reach out to people you’ve already built those relationships with and they can give you the inside track on how to get the job, or at least point you in the right direction.

Research the company

When you’re in the market for a new job, it’s important to know what you want. I’ve heard many people say, “I just want a job!” That mindset isn’t great for the job seeker or future employers, so take the time to research and think about what you really want in a job and in a company. Once you figure that out, hone in on a few companies that you think would be great to work for and do your homework. Research the company on LinkedIn, search for news articles, see what people are saying about it on Glassdoor, and even ask your personal network if anyone has knowledge of the company that might be helpful. If you do land an interview, your potential employer will be really impressed if you are familiar with what the company does and what it stands for.??

Get to know their customers

Another thing that will give you major bonus points in an interview is if you understand who the company’s ideal customer is and what they are trying to accomplish with that demographic. Research the product or service the company sells, who buys it, and why.?

Customize your resume

First, find jobs that match your qualifications. Most employers simply will not entertain your “potential” to be a great match. Then, make sure your resume matches precisely what the company is looking for. Sometimes people are an excellent fit but their resumes don’t say that and they are passed over. Make sure that your resume looks like this is the only job you're applying for and not like you’ll take anything you can get.?
