As we enter the rainy season, it is more important than ever to take precautions against slip and fall accidents. For the elderly in particular, a slip and fall accident can have life changing medical and financial consequences.
Below are five tips to help you and your loved ones stay safe this rainy season.
- Avoid stepping in what appears to be small puddles or wet patches in parking lots. These sometimes conceal a larger pothole or crack which can cause a fall.
- Be extra vigilant when entering and exiting buildings. This is where people wipe their feet and shake off their umbrellas. It is therefore where ultra-slick conditions are most likely to exist. Often there will be a rubber mats at entryways, but be cautious for rubber mats not laying flat upon the floor. These are trip hazards.
- Be cautious of smooth-surfaced concrete, especially at gas stations and parking areas, which were not brushed when the concrete was first poured. The combination of the smooth surface with rainwater and oil creates a dangerous slick surface.
- Wear rubber soled shoes with good traction. Avoid wearing slick-soled shoes and shoes with leather soles if possible, as such shoes dramatically increase your risk of falling in wet conditions.
- Always use the handrail when going up or down stairs. Even if you feel you don't need it, a tumble down the stairs usually results in serious injury, and anyone can miss a step.
