“We live in a time in which the individual posting, presenting oneself, is more important to everyone than spending an hour together. For a long time, we were a country of clubs, where people came together and did different things together in sports clubs, traditional costume or music clubs. Today, it's worth more to stand alone by a mountain lake for an hour and take an Instagram photo.

It is important to realize what a beautiful country we live in, both scenically and culturally. What opportunities we have if we all stick together and don't paint everything extremely black, begrudge our neighbors nothing and are consumed by envy. I've never met a person who does things on their own and then automatically gets ahead faster and better than if they do them with someone else. That's a very important point.

Fortunately, it was quick that we united the fans and gave them something back.

One example: there was extreme flooding in many parts of the country. You can support each other there. And not always see the negative. Support each other, integrate people so that they feel comfortable, work together for a better future.”

This is an excerpt of what the German national coach Julian Nagelsmann said in the press conference after losing against Spain in the quarterfinals of the Euro2024. I think the found the right words, addressing a nation that is currently more focused on what doesn’t work and complaining about that, instead of fixing things and moving the country forward. It’s only soccer. But sports can bring people together and this tournament was really important for Germany.

Also, he said that it hurts that we now have to wait two years until we will be World Champion. I like this attitude. We have a great team and I’m sure we will see great matches in the future. We can achieve so much if we believe in ourselves. Not just on the pitch, but in life in general.

And now for something completely different: here are the five articles I picked out this week! Enjoy!

Project 2025 was supposed to boost Donald Trump's campaign — but it may be backfiring instead

I’m not so sure about the backfiring. The media seems to be more interested in debating Biden’s age while ignoring his achievements in governing the nation and while at the same time allowing Trump to say whatever he wants.

This is scary stuff. Voters should tell all their friends and family to vote against Trump. It really counts this year!

Labour has been sent a warning

“If the British electorate had an identity and personality, which of course it doesn’t, it would be saying to Labour: this is your huge builders’ mandate; here is your five years to prove yourselves. But take nothing for granted. Don’t swagger, stop listening or go back to top-down Westminster politics as usual. We have had enough. And if you don’t notice that message, you will come to regret it.” - while Labour won the election, we shouldn’t overlook the fact that the populist Reform party also gained massive votes and that rebuilding the nation will not be a simple task after 14 years of Tory rule.

When RAND Made Magic in Santa Monica

I’ve always been interested in technology and how the right policy could lead to more innovation that would in turn spark economic growth. RAND, Xerox PARC and Bell Labs are probably the institutions that I read about most often. So I really enjoyed this article about RAND and its achievements, but also it’s current outlook.

Hush-Hush Affair

Non-Disclosure Agreements are getting more popular again in an effort to keep people from talking about things that should stay secret. Certainly, there are instances where an NDA makes sense, but it looks like people are stretching the idea of an NDA too far. As an investor, I stopped signing NDA with startups a long time ago, basically because too many business models shared ideas and features, which would make it hard for me to work with the companies.

Sign Snatchers Beware, That Campaign Poster Might Have an AirTag

Obviously, it is not okay to steal campaign posters. It does happen all the time and while I applaud the ingenuity of using Apple AirTags to be able to reclaim the posters, I’m really happy that this wasn’t possible when I was 16 years old and took down campaign posters of the Marxist-Leninist Party to built a skateboarding ramp out of it.
