Five Things Coaching Accomplishes for Business.
The one thing I love about coaching today is that coaching is moving from this "it would be nice to do if I had time" movement to now "we must coach our people"! Finally, people are starting to make the connection between coaching and specific business imperatives.
First, talent development. People cannot arbitrarily get better, and I'll let you in on a little secret. Most employees will not seek improvement unless challenged. talent development leads to progress in progress is known to be the number one motivator of employees today; whereas, most people think it's money recognition or reward. Coaching drives the professional and emotional feeling of getting better which develops the highest degree of motivation and ultimate talent development.
Second, retention. The number one reason people quit companies today is not the organization itself, but rather their direct manager. The manager to employee relationship is sacred to keeping and/or letting employees leave. As we say when we provide our public speaking services, managers coach every day, they either coach people to stay at the company through engagement or they coach people to leave the organization through silence. And trust me silence is very loud to employees as they often feel ignored or underappreciated
Third, a cultural participation can only occur when a leader facilitates such participation and makes people feel good about getting better. a culture of participation is when employees will arbitrarily work together by practicing or sharing information often on their own and not simply through management directives.
Fourth, recruitment. Our ability to recruit talent is vital to any organization, but here's the thing we need to understand more than anything as organizations and as leaders. We have such a small world now due to platforms such as Facebook and LinkedIn. It is very easy for people to find out what each leader's like to work for by simply going on a social media or networking site and finding a contact or a connection that can give insight to what that manager's like.
Last, team development only occurs when people feel good about working with one another. A skilled coach will facilitate not only teamwork but positive interactions with one another.
Coaching drives so many successful imperatives, but these are just five that came to mind and if willing please add other imperatives you feel coaching addresses. Certainly, this blog post is not indicating these are the only five. What I love more than anything is that training departments and coaches are finally getting their due credit. I work with some amazing training departments and now that coaching has been deployed their value has gone up as it should.
