Five Technologies Shaping Indian Lives in 2025
As an observer of the emerging technology space, I look forward to 2025 with cautious optimism. While revolutionary breakthroughs often dominate headlines, it’s the quieter maturing of technologies—those moving beyond labs and pilot phases—that truly begins to make a difference. In India, several consumer-facing innovations are evolving from exciting concepts into solutions that could change how we live, work, and connect.
Here are five such technologies that, in my view, could start making a meaningful impact on Indian lives in the coming year.
The Internet Takes to the Skies
Bridging India’s digital divide has been a persistent challenge, especially in rural and remote regions where traditional connectivity infrastructure struggles to reach. Satellite internet is emerging as a potential game-changer here. Companies like OneWeb, backed by Bharti Airtel, have been deploying low-Earth orbit satellites aimed at bringing high-speed internet to underserved areas. Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet venture, is also expected to enter the Indian market, promising to disrupt the space further.
The potential impact is enormous. Students in remote villages can attend online classes without interruptions, farmers can access real-time market data, and health workers can deliver telemedicine consultations to patients in remote communities. Challenges around affordability and regulation remain, but satellite internet could finally make connectivity commonplace, not just for the urban elite but for all Indians.
Battery Swapping: Rethinking EV Infrastructure
The shift to electric vehicles in India is gaining traction, but it’s clear that charging infrastructure is lagging. Retrofitting older apartment buildings and setting up a network of charging stations in congested cities is a monumental task. Battery swapping offers a smarter solution, particularly for two-wheelers and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) that dominate Indian roads.
Sun Mobility, for instance, has partnered with Indian Oil Corporation to establish swap stations, while Hero MotoCorp has announced plans to roll out a battery-swapping network. This technology allows EV owners to replace a depleted battery with a fully charged one in minutes, avoiding the downtime of traditional charging. It will be especially beneficial for delivery workers and ride-share drivers, whose incomes depend on minimizing time off the road.
With more companies entering the space and operational models becoming clearer, 2025 could be the year battery swapping takes center stage in the EV ecosystem, and I start thinking of owning an EV
Biometric Payments: Simplifying Financial Access
India has long been a leader in digital payments, thanks to the success of UPI and Aadhaar. Building on this foundation, biometric payment systems are poised to make transactions even more accessible. These systems use fingerprint or iris authentication to link directly to bank accounts, enabling payments without the need for smartphones, apps, or cards.
This innovation has the potential to empower those often left behind by technology. It is simple, intuitive, and uniquely suited to India’s diverse population.

Waste-to-Energy: Building Cleaner Cities
India’s waste management crisis is no secret—mountains of garbage in urban centers are a daily reminder of the problem. Waste-to-energy technology offers a promising way forward, converting municipal solid waste into electricity, biofuels, or compost. While still in its early stages, this approach is gaining traction in cities like Bengaluru and Pune.
Companies like Ramky Enviro Engineers and Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) are leading efforts to scale these solutions. KPCL, for instance, runs a waste-to-energy plant in Bengaluru that processes hundreds of tons of waste each day, turning what was once a liability into a resource. While these projects alone won’t solve India’s waste problem, they represent an important step toward sustainable urban living and renewable energy generation.
Mental Health Meets AR/VR
Mental health is finally getting the recognition it has long deserved after being overlooked for far too long. However, access to professional help remains a significant challenge. Emerging technologies like virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are stepping in to bridge this gap. These tools create immersive therapeutic environments, offering innovative ways to address conditions such as anxiety, PTSD, and phobias.
Institutions like NIMHANS have been exploring VR-based therapy as part of their clinical toolkit. Early applications include virtual exposure therapy for phobias, guided meditation for stress relief, and immersive environments that can help patients with PTSD reprocess traumatic events. While widespread adoption will take time, 2025 could see meaningful progress in making these tools more affordable and accessible.
Looking Ahead
Technology often matures quietly in the background until one day, it becomes indispensable. As we enter 2025, these five technologies are at different stages of this journey. Some are ready to scale, while others are just beginning to prove their potential.
The true measure of success for these innovations won’t be the buzz they generate but how well they solve real-world problems for ordinary Indians. From a shopkeeper in a small village to a delivery driver navigating city streets, these technologies should touch lives in ways that matter.
What do you think about these emerging trends? Are there other technologies you see reshaping life in India in 2025?

1 个月Food for thought, Vishy. Of the 5 you mention, I see Satellite Internet having exponential impact -- will catapult education, our understanding of workspaces and remote working, healthcare and many more into new levels of scope and impact. You've already said it and I'm sure your next srticle on this will throw up even more far-reaching solutions!

1 个月Great reading ! What I liked most is your emphasis that ' the technologies that mature quietly in the background' ... If they shake the foundations of our practices, the effect they create will be beyond predictions.. Cautious, since they could land in wrong hands?

Mental health solutions will make a lot of us so much more productive (it's a bigger problem than we yet perceive). Clean cities... Let's put our heads, hearts and bodies into this! What we have now is shameful. Great insights, Dr. Shenoy!
