Starting therapy can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. Whether it's your first time or you're returning after a break, a little preparation can make a big difference in how effective and comfortable the process is for you. Here are five key steps to help you get ready:
1. Clarify Your Goals
Before diving into therapy, it’s helpful to have a sense of what you want to achieve. Are you looking to manage anxiety, improve relationships, or work through a specific issue? Having clear goals can guide your therapy and ensure you and your therapist are on the same page from the start.
2. Research Different Therapy Approaches
Understanding the basics of different therapy modalities—like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or mindfulness-based approaches—can help you choose a therapist who specialises in the approach that best suits your needs. If you’re unsure, your therapist can provide guidance during your first session.
3. Reflect on Past Experiences
Consider any past experiences with therapy or how you typically handle stress. Reflecting on what has or hasn’t worked for you in the past can provide valuable insights for your therapist, helping them tailor their approach to support you better.

4. Prepare Emotionally
It’s normal to feel a mix of emotions before starting therapy. Acknowledge these feelings and consider how they might influence your experience. Awareness of your emotions can help you communicate more effectively with your therapist.
5. Be Open to the Process
Approach therapy with an open mind. Remember, it’s a process, and it may take time before you start to see significant progress. Be patient with yourself, and trust that with the right support, you can make meaningful strides toward your goals.
Taking these steps can set you up for a more focused and productive therapy experience. If you’re feeling anxious or unsure—that’s okay. It’s all part of the process.
