Business Communication is like any skill, if you are willing to work at it every day you can improve rapidly and improve the quality of every part of your life.
There are many poor communication habits that any person may be doing on a daily basis, bad body language, and listening skills. That hinders your ability to communicate with those around you.
Here are five signs of poor communication skills.
1 Interrupting those around you.
This is an obvious sign of a bad listener. This is disrespectful to the other person who is talking. This sends the message that what they are saying and is not as important as what you have to say. If this person feels that you do not care what they are saying, why would they say anything to you?
If you are really “listening” you should not be thinking about what you have to say. It is impossible to fully comprehend something if you are thinking about something else.
2. Mind wondering off.
Does your mind wonder off when other people talk?
Do you hear the first half of a sentence and immediately begin forming a response or opinion in your mind?
3.Not asking the right question (s)
If you are not listening attentively, you are probably not picking up key information. A lot of times if you listen actively your question could be answered while the person is speaking. If doesn’t then you know you have a valid question.
4. Feeling instead of thinking.
This one is harder to control especially when talking about controversial topics that make or create emotions. Need to be careful not to feel instead of think. Adding too much emotion when you are communicating can cause your message to get lost in the translation.
5. If you refuse to admit you are wrong.
This could be difficult for a lot of people especially if it is something you are passionate about. Part of being a good communicator is listening to the opinions of others and using it as an opportunity to grow and develop.
I hope these five simple but often overlooked traits of poor communicators will help you to become a better communicator!
