Five Scriptures on Christ-like Service
At Edify, we believe Christ-like service can be transformative. Every day, we see this value in action: students showing kindness to their peers, teachers dedicating extra time to guide and mentor, and Edify staff praying with school proprietors across the world. These acts reflect the heart of Jesus, who said, “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve” (Mark 10:45, NIV).
Christ-like service is more than an action — it’s a calling. Whether training school proprietors, equipping teachers, or bringing up the next generation of student leaders, we aim to serve with joy, humility, and prayer. Here are five Scriptures that guide and encourage us in this mission:
1. Philippians 2:3-4 (NLT)
“Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.”
This verse reminds us that true service begins with a posture of humility, placing others' needs above our own and seeking ways to uplift and encourage them. Genuine service grows from a heart willing to put others first, following Christ’s example.
2. 1 Peter 4:10 (NLT)
“God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.”
Each of us has been uniquely gifted by God with talents, abilities, and resources that can bring hope and joy to others when shared generously. These gifts are not meant to be kept to ourselves but instead to bless those around us and build a stronger, more compassionate community.
3. Matthew 25:40 (NLT)
“...‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’”
Every act of service, no matter how small or unseen, is a meaningful way to honor Christ. When we respond to God’s call to care for those around us, we reflect His love and grace. Whether we receive recognition or not, each kind deed is a testimony to His presence in our lives.
4. Galatians 5:13 (NLT)
“...Use your freedom to serve one another in love.”
Service rooted in love is a tangible expression of the freedom and grace we’ve received through Christ. Because the Holy Spirit dwells within us, we are empowered to share His love abundantly, even in challenging circumstances, and to shine His light in a world that desperately needs it.
5. Colossians 3:23-24 (NLT)
“Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.”
This verse reminds us that our acts of service, no matter how ordinary they may seem, are ultimately for God’s glory. When we serve with a heart devoted to Him, we bring honor to His name and advance His kingdom in ways we may not always see.
Together, these Scriptures remind us that Christ-like service is love in action, a reflection of God’s character and His work in the world.
