Five Requirements of CEOs from David McLean's "A Road Taken - My Journey From A CN Station House to the CN Board Room"

1. They had to know how to operate the business.

2. They had to be a strategic thinker.

3. They had to understand the importance of succession plan-ning and be prepared to devote considerable time to it among management.

4. They had to understand labor relations and know how to effectively deal with these issues, whether it was unions, compensation matters, or just motivating management.

5. They had to be a leader. In other words, they had to have the "royal jelly." This was somewhat subjective, but you can usually spot a leader when they are faced with a tough situation. Did they display judgment and vision? This was a difficult thing to measure but critical in separating good senior executives from CEOS.
