The Engine Room 002 | Five quick wins on Reels ??
Hello and big welcome to our new subscribers! Thanks for taking the time to subscribe - we hope in means you enjoyed Drop 001 last week.
In Drop 001, we covered the importance of Reels and its ability to shortcut the requirement to build your following and reach a?lot?of non-followers.?
We also mentioned the fact that this isn’t an easy pivot for many brands and creators from static content, which is relatively low-cost and low-resource, to video content which needs more thought and potentially more investment. We’re disbelievers of pure algorithm hacking - posting static images with sounds over the top or a 2 second looped video with 'see more in the caption below' copy. We see you and it’s not a good look for your brand or personal brand, nor will it generate rich views either!?
As ever, we're constantly researching and living in the sports content landscape and have found five quick wins for your Reels content plan:
?1. How It's Made
These videos often gain way more views than the finished piece. We love watching a blank canvas or a messy idea become a work of art. And it's an easy win - just ask your designers to screen record as they go.
2. Carousels On The Move
We were previously huge advocates of carousels when these were all the rage in the IG algorithm. Publishers such as GOAL have successfully experimented with re-creating the carousel format but with video. This type of format can work brilliantly for listicles and timelines playing on the natural human curiosity to get to the end.?

3. Pinch and Zoom
OK this one is slightly more expensive but produces real 'wow' results. It's a great way to showcase depth of information and tell unique stories using a classic Droste effect. As a viewer, you stick around as you want to see what's coming next and where it's coming from. Dwell time = algorithm push and algorithm push = views!
4. Out Of Context Sound
A solid one for clubs and rightsholders. Utilise existing footage but introduce humour by adding a trending or ‘classic’ sound. Take a bow Brentford...
5. Animation
Reinvent archive footage with innovative animation techniques such as rotoscoping. This gives a new lease of life to old footage whilst tapping into the artistry seen on Instagram. It's also a great way for non-rightsholders to jump on footage and moments that they don't have the rights to. Have a look at our rotoscope work for Rugby Football League!
