The Five Practices to Implement Values Based Leadership

The Five Practices to Implement Values Based Leadership

When you consider leadership, do you think of a CEO, a politician, or a school principal? If so, you aren’t alone—many people equate leadership with a title.

But here’s the thing: Although these roles are important, the people in them are not necessarily leaders. That’s because a position does not make you a leader; your behavior does. In other words, leadership is a choice, not a title.

And if you are a leader, you have the opportunity and responsibility to positively impact others. How can you do that? With Values Based Leadership.

Values Based Leadership occurs between people, and it always starts with you.

To successfully implement Values Based Leadership, it’s important to understand one key thing: The process of Values Based Leadership includes five interdependent practices.

  • Building awareness.
  • Realizing potential.
  • Developing relationships.
  • Taking action.
  • Practicing reflection.

Ultimately, these practices are not linear; one does not lead to the other. Put another way, these practices spin together like the gears of an engine. When all the gears are moving, the engine is performing well. But when one of the gears is out of line, the engine loses power and may seize up. And the same is true of Values Based Leadership.
