Five More years!

It feels like yesterday that Filipe H. and I signed the lease for our current Flagship retail store at 1930 Camden Rd, in the heart of Southend. It was May 2019, a huge day, especially since we had been trying to find a new location for over three years before that. I can remember it vividly. The amazing smell of Honey Buns in the air from the Carolina Foods plant a block away, the hustle and bustle of Jeni's Ice Cream (the lines have only gotten longer sense), parking in the lot (now the Lowes building), and taking in the sights and sounds of what would become home for the next 5 years. Were we ready for this? What if this didn't work? What if a global pandemic came along (wait, that actually would happen a few months later on the week we were trying to open)? If you can guess, rent in Southend is not cheap, folks, as It's the latest shopping hub in Charlotte and has exploded in recent years. It was the proverbial make-or-break for us, and all our chips were on the table.??

Five years later, and well… we did it! Not only did we survive, but we thrived. As we close out 2024, I’m excited to announce that we have renewed our lease for another 5+ years. This is huge for us and will carry us through to 15+ years in business by the time the new lease is up (crazy!). I can’t help but realize that I’ll also be in my early 40s when that happens. This leads me to another point: if you had told mid-20s Brad that we’d still be doing this when I was 40, there’s no way I would have believed you… but here we are!?

Recently, someone asked me how we’ve managed to last this long in retail. The market is oversaturated, particularly in clothing, and many brands fail within just a few years. Although that question was complex and layered, my response was simple: we are passionate about our work and aim to fulfill a larger mission—building confidence and inspiring individuals to be their best selves through what they are wearing. The most successful brands in the world address an issue or solve a problem, and after 11 years, I can confidently say that we are among them. While we aren't an international or even a national brand (yet, haha), we have successfully carved out our niche at a slow and steady pace. So here is to five more years...and I hope you will come and see us.

?Watch: This is a bit of a different recommendation this week for me. If you haven't checked out The Day of the Jackal, it is fantastic. A spy/thriller series starring Eddie Redmayne, it hits all the marks of what I love in a TV series. Also since we are on TV shows, don't sleep on Lioness. Created by Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone, Sicario, 1883, 1923), I genuinely don't know how he does it all. He even appears in a couple of episodes of season 2...dude is a stud!

?AI: Every week, I'll share insights on Artificial Intelligence (the good and the bad) and how we, or other businesses, can leverage it. This is an exciting day! The styling side of OMJ never gets enough credit, even for me, I get any number of questions from clients (which I always encourage them to do) about fashion, styling, or clothing-related things.
