Five Lessons for Leaders from Baseball playoffs
The recent baseball league championships provided several lessons for leaders to learn and practice.
Never Give Up. Both the American and National League Championships went to 7 games. In both cases teams that were down 3 games to 1 and 3 games to none came back. In one case they won, in another case, they didn't win but showed tremendous pride and grit. Isn't that what you want to promote in your team?
Give someone a chance. AJ Minter of the Braves had never started a game. I don't mean in the playoffs, I mean ever in his major league career! The Braves trusted him and he tied a record, striking out 5 in a row. You never know who will come through for you if you don't give them a chance.
Go for the glory. The Dodgers got a record 11 runs in the first inning, including hitting 3 home runs. Both are playoff records. Don't be satisfied with the ordinary, go for the glory.
Even rookies can get hot. Randy Arozarena has all but set the rookie record for hits in the playoffs. Derek Jeter has 22. The World Series hasn't even started and Arozarena has 21. And an MVP for the American League Championship Series. Who's your rookie sensation?
Shine in prime time. In a strike and covid-shortened season, there weren't any records that were able to be set or smashed. Yet these playoffs showed off the excitement and joy of pure baseball. Who shines for you when the lights are on?
