Scottish Tech Ecosystem Review – Five key updates?

Nearly three years on from the publication of the Scottish Technology Ecosystem Review (STER), the Scottish Government has issued an update on the progress of key recommendations.??

Notably, this week saw the launch of the Techscaler programme. Housed in locations across Scotland, the Techscaler Hubs will provide vital support for startups and mentoring services for entrepreneurs.??

The government also highlighted several key actions taken since the publication of the STER, including the launch of the Ecosystem Fund and the introduction of STACS, the Scottish Teachers Advancing Computing Science organisation.??

Sofant Technologies raises £4.2 million??

Edinburgh-based radio technology specialist, Sofant Technologies, has secured £4.2 million following a successful funding round.?

Led by EMV Capital, the investment round saw additional support pledged by Scottish Enterprise, Kelvin Capital, the Future Fund and NetScientific.?

The firm said it will use the investment to build a satellite communications terminal which targets mobile applications during the first half of 2023.?

A scientist at Heriot-Watt University has been awarded £2.5 million to lead a groundbreaking study into the potential of quantum communications.?

Professor Mehul Malik is just one of four academics in the UK to be recognised by the Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies programme.?

Glasgow startup secures share of £73m clean transport fund?

The UK Government has announced £73 million in new funding for the development of clean transport technologies.?

The initiative, which is supported by government and industry investment, will aid projects across the UK to build an end-to-end supply chain for zero-emissions vehicles (ZEVs).?

Glasgow-based hydrogen vehicle startup HVS is one of the joint winners, receiving £30 million to develop a hydrogen fuel cell-powered HGV cab and tractor unit to replace the highly polluting diesel-powered vehicles currently used to transport road freight.?

Scottish medtech takes off with Boeing partnership?

Scottish medtech firm Aiber has announced plans to double its workforce following the upgrade of its ‘carry onboard’ solution to support medical emergencies.?

The upgrade is made possible by six months of intensive trials supported by Boeing.?

As part of the deal, Aiber said it will further roll out its product to customers in the aviation and maritime sectors in Europe, the US, and the Middle East.?

EV charging infrastructure needs private investment to grow?

To ensure the long-term growth, sustainability and reliability of the public EV charging network in Scotland, crucial private sector investment is needed to grow it at scale and pace, according to a new report from the Scottish Futures Trust (SFT).?

The research claims that subsidies and sometimes free charging applied by owners of charge ports on the ChargePlace Scotland network has deterred private sector investment in EV charging in Scotland, potentially harming the growth of the EV network.?

Scottish Tech Army scoops digital town award?

Less than a year since the Scottish Tech Army (STA) launched its SOLE project, they are today celebrating scooping the Scotland Loves Local Digital Town Award at this year’s Scotland’s Towns Conference.?

The SOLE project (Supporting Our Local Economy) is a focal community platform created by the STA, a 2,000-strong community of passionate volunteers providing technology solutions to the benefit of people and communities in Scotland.?

IT upgrades help South Lanarkshire Council cut emissions?

Upgrades to the South Lanarkshire Council digital and IT provisions has resulted in significant carbon savings and helped to streamline the delivery of services.?

Working with data centre provider DataVita, the council will save over 2,000 MWh of energy annually – down from 2,222 MWh to 140 MWh, a 94% reduction.?

Emissions will also be cut by 95%, decreasing from 91 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent to five tonnes, by migrating data storage to DataVita’s DV1 facility.?

Hearing Diagnostics eyes market expansion with £1.1m fundraise?

Edinburgh-based healthtech company, Hearing Diagnostics, plans to accelerate commercialisation in the domestic and US markets following a £1.1m fundraise.?

Led by Archangels, the investment round also included support from Scottish Enterprise through its Scottish Co-Investment Fund.?

The firm said the funding boost will enable it to unlock its market potential and expand internationally.?
