Five iOS Features Great for Travelling.
Tappable's Lead iOS Developer, Connor Habibi, outlines five iOS features great for travelling.
1. Apple Wallet?
The Apple wallet is typically known to store your credit card/ debit card and use it to go shopping, but it has more features you may not know about.
In the US, you can store your driving license and ID in your wallet, so there is no need to carry them around. This provides convenience, e.g. when you go to a bar, simply use your apple wallet instead of taking your ID.
It's not yet available in the UK, but I'm sure it will be soon!
When travelling, you can store your boarding pass in your Apple wallet; this is especially helpful when your train/flight has a delay or a cancellation, as your boarding pass gets updated automatically in real-time as it updates with the server. For example, if your seat changes, it will update your boarding pass as this happens. Cool, right?
Another perk of the Apple wallet is reward cards; add them to your wallet, and you're good to go! No more hunting for the keychain or missing out on deals.
Apple recently introduced car keys to your Apple wallet, a new technology, but the concept of having car keys stored with a simple face ID or finger ID sounds pretty impressive.
2. Apple Home???
People seem to think Apple Home is just being able to turn the lights off and on, and though that's pretty cool, there is more to Apple Home.
If you’re travelling, you can see the live update on what’s going on in your home, and if the smoke alarm activates, you get an immediate notification.?
You'll be able to see the tv, lights, and motion sensor. This gives you peace of mind knowing that your home is safe and everything is under control.
3. Find My
We know Find My is incredibly useful for people who have lost their Apple device, as it lets users track the location of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS devices, AirPods, AirTags and more!
Alternatively, it can be used for travelling to track where you are by notifying people of your location.
The great thing about Find My is that if you lose your device, the people who find it can activate the Find My and will gain access to your contact details like; name, email address etc., and can get in touch with you to let you know where your device is.

And if these people decide to steal it, you can erase everything, thoroughly wipe the phone and have peace of mind knowing that no one can have access to any details. Essentially, that device is dead.
Find My pairs with AirTag as a tracking device designed to act as a key finder, which helps people find personal belongings. For example, you can attach AirTags to your backpack, camera, and handbag. Any time you're in doubt, open your phone and see if the AirTags are still with you; if they are, you know that your belongings are safe.
If stolen, you'll be able to track them down by using Find My.
4. Apple Camera
Apple is known for their excellent cameras.
Small, convenient and full of features. Great for travelling light.
The iPhone camera provides different photographic styles like; cinematic mode, slow motion, pano, portrait, and more! Excellent quality and zoom range.
5. Apple Maps
Anyone who has used Apple Maps knows that it was terrible.
Apple was aware of this, so they turned it to the ground and rebuilt it again. Having experimented on it, I can confirm it has improved dramatically with new features!
Travelling to new places can get complicated.?
But the Apple Maps update will tell you the exact lane you need to be in. Some places even get a 3D view, so before making that commitment to travel, you can take a look around virtually, which is valuable and fun at the same time!
Even if you're not travelling, it's an exciting feature for people to explore different places/countries without physically being there.
You can also find public transport timetables using Apple Map for added convenience.
I enjoy the AR (Augmented Reality) feature on Apple Maps. It's useful when travelling in new areas as getting lost is easy.
For example, you come out of the underground in London, and you look around to find you're lost... all you need to do is open your phone and turn on the camera. The AR will recognise where you are, and it will display what direction you need to go in.
This feature is still developing, so it will improve, and I imagine it becoming popular in the Apple community.
