Five important steps to consider for a smooth transition from High-Pressure Sodium to LED Grow Lights

Horticulture, like other businesses, is becoming more and more competitive daily. Growers are adopting new techniques to enhance plant quality, increase harvest cycles, and reduce operating expenses. Transitioning from High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) to LED grow lights is one such technique, and rightly so – they offer the best price per micromole (2.8 μmol/joule), have an active or passive cooling system, and have an IP67 water resistance rating. Another benefit is that its wavelengths can vary from 440 nm to 700nm and so, they can benefit a variety of plants. If you’re in this process (or thinking about it), we have a few tips on how you can make this transition smooth.?

Important things to note so you can make a smooth transition from HPS to LED Grow Lights?

If you’re a grower, you must want to maximize the benefits of using cutting-edge LED grow lights, right? Well, we have got you covered with the most important things to do while making this transition.?

1. Temperature Control?

Plants require a certain amount of heat for photosynthesis. While HPS lights tend to turn very warm, LED lights do not, which is why the temperature on your HVAC system must be increased once they are installed. The optimum temperature range for photosynthesis is 35-40 degrees C.??

2. Managing Moisture Levels?

Too much or too little moisture is detrimental to plant health. If the air gets saturated, the water can condense to form a film on the plants, making it susceptible to disease. This is why humidity levels must be increased or decreased proportionally with the temperature. ?

3. Dehumidification?

LED grow lights emit significantly lower heat than their HPS counterparts, which is why your HVAC system won’t work as hard to cool the room. This also means that it won’t be removing enough water vapour either. Installing an external dehumidifier is a wise choice in this scenario to keep your plant health optimal.?

4. Colour Spectrum?

Different colours within an LED lights colour spectrum affect the taste, smell, texture, firmness, and nutritional value of a plant. Research shows that certain light wavelengths tweak volatile compounds in a plant while light intensity is directly proportional to its nutritional value. Choose the colour spectrum based on the crops you grow.?

5. Monitor Transpiration Levels?

Transpiration is the process by which a plant exhales water vapour through its stomata. The higher the transpiration rate, the better your plant grows. However, plants require the right ambient temperature and humidity levels for optimal transpiration. You must tweak those levels to ensure your plants grow efficiently.??

We can now say that you know the tricks of the trade! Well, that is if you already have LED grow lights in your plantation. If not, you’re probably on the lookout, right? Who can you approach to retrofit your property with LED grow lights??
