Five Habits to Make Your Week Successful

Five Habits to Make Your Week Successful

Commit to Sleeping for Eight Hours

According to the National Sleep Foundation, seven to nine hours of sleep is recommended for adults ranging from 26 – 64 years of age. Many people including myself, who happens to fall within that age range, often sleep under the recommended amount of hours of sleep. A lack of sleep has been associated to poor memory, increased risk of adverse health conditions including obesity, heart disease, depression and has even been associated with poor metabolism. The lack of sleep often leaves me feeling exhausted and dragging mentally and physically day to day until Friday comes. Clearly, nothing good comes from not sleeping. If you’re truly committed to making your week successful, I highly suggest establishing sleeping habits such as abiding by a designated time to sleep, avoiding stimulants like caffeine before bed and maybe even meditating at the end of each night.

Schedule Out Your Week

While many us wake up with the intention of being productive, our week can certainly be more efficiently structured and accomplished if planned ahead by scheduling each day in an online calendar or planner. Outlook, Google Calendar and an actual planner are three forms of scheduling I use consistently. Taking time to schedule your week will lead to improved time management, give you an opportunity to prioritize tasks and enhance efficiency throughout your week. I also highly recommend scheduling time in your week for yourself – “me time.” It could be time during your week you take to walk, lunch with a friend or anything that takes your mind off work and allows you to destress and have something fun to look forward to.

Practice the Growth Mindset Weekly

If you’re not familiar with Carol Dweck’s reference of the Growth Mindset, I highly suggest you invest time to read her books, watch her videos and learn more about both the Growth Mindset and Fixed Mindset. In brief, a growth mindset is the belief that intelligence can be developed versus a Fixed Mindset, a belief that intelligence cannot be developed and is fixed. People who practice the Growth Mindset understand they can get smarter through hard work, use of effective strategies and help from others when needed. Practicing the Growth Mindset in your work weekly will hopefully result in continuous development and learning.

Organize Your Workspace

A workspace that is cluttered with piles of papers and unorganized can be overwhelming. I have definitely had workspaces that I would refer to as a “method to my madness” when colleagues asked if I could locate documents. Method or not, it was definitely not the best practice. Take time to declutter your workspace, shred unnecessary documents, file documents appropriately and create a workspace that is clearly organized. I also recommend placing a few personal items at your workspace such as photos of family and friends plants to add some green and maybe keep a snack to avoid getting hangry on those days when it’s hard to get away for lunch.

Be Grateful and Celebrate Your Success

Practicing gratitude and recognizing success is essential to self-fulfillment in the workplace. Personally, I practice writing down a few things daily that I’m grateful for. It could be a new learned task, time with a mentor, my paycheck or more! By intentionally recognizing things I’m grateful for each day, it has allowed me to intentionally reflect on the positive parts of each day rather than dwell on the negative parts.

Celebrating my success – both big and small – has also led me to a feeling of accomplishment which consistently reinforces my own successes and celebrating team successes has led to strengthened relationships with colleagues. I’ve learned to be flexible with what success looks like and to appreciate all of it. It could clearing out an inbox of emails, it could be a productive meeting with colleagues, meeting a deadline for a project, positive feedback from a client or more! How do you measure your success? If you practice gratitude and celebrating your successes, this positive attitude and behavior will definitely have a transformation impact in your life and ultimately help you to make your week successful.
