INTRODUCTION:
Coaches, the game has changed forever and it’s not going back…
In today’s digital era, live video has become an indispensable tool for coaches, trainers, and authors. It’s a powerful way to connect with your audience, share your message, and grow your business. Yet, many professionals feel uneasy about going live, fearing they might appear unprofessional, shaky, or awkward. If you're one of them, you're not alone. Confidence in front of the camera doesn’t come naturally to everyone, but the good news is that it can be learned.
In this article, I'll guide you through five essential tips to help you look and sound like a pro when you go live. By following these tips, you'll avoid common pitfalls and boost your camera confidence, ensuring that your live sessions are engaging and effective.
1. DON’T HOLD THE CAMERA
One of the most distracting elements of a live video is a shaky camera. Holding the camera by hand not only makes your video look unsteady but also tires your arm, leading to constant adjustments and more instability. To maintain a stable frame and convey professionalism, invest in a tripod. Tripods are affordable and come in various forms, from desktop models to flexible ones that can be attached to different surfaces.
If a tripod isn't available, use a selfie stick and hold it against your body to minimize movement. The key is to keep the camera steady to avoid distracting your viewers with unnecessary motion. A stable camera allows your audience to focus on your message rather than on the wobbling distracting visual frame.
2. KEEP THE BACKGROUND FREE OF DISTRACTIONS
Your background sets the tone for your live video. A cluttered or messy background can distract your audience and detract from your message. Choose a plain, simple backdrop to keep the focus on you. A tidy, organized space without excessive decorations or open cupboards is ideal. For example, a plain wall, a simple bookshelf, or a clean desk can serve as an excellent backdrop.
Remember, the goal is to minimize distractions. The more straightforward your background, the more your audience can concentrate on your words. Ensure your environment is quiet, reducing background noise that might divert attention from your presentation. A visually and audibly distraction-free setting enhances your professionalism and keeps your audience engaged.
3. LOOK AT THE LENS
Eye contact is crucial for building a connection with your audience. When you're looking at your own image on the screen instead of the camera lens, it breaks this connection, making you appear disengaged. Always look directly into the lens to create the illusion of eye contact with your viewers.
To help with this, place a small sticker or mark near the lens as a reminder of where to look. This simple trick ensures you maintain direct engagement with your audience, making them feel more connected to you and your message. Consistent eye contact helps build trust and rapport, key elements in effective communication.
4. CLEAN YOUR LENS

A clear, sharp image is fundamental to a professional-looking video. A smudged or dirty lens can make your video look cloudy and unprofessional. Before going live, take a moment to clean the lens on both sides of your camera. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to remove any fingerprints or dust that might obscure the lens.
This simple yet often overlooked step can significantly improve your video quality. A clean lens ensures your image is crisp and clear, allowing your audience to see you clearly and focus on your message without visual distractions.
5. FRAME YOURSELF CORRECTLY
Proper framing is essential for a polished appearance. Avoid having too much empty space above your head or being off-center. Ideally, position yourself in the center of the frame with a small amount of space above your head and enough room on the sides to include your shoulders.
If you plan to add text or graphics to your video, position yourself slightly to one side to leave space for the text. However, for most live sessions, staying centered is best. Correct framing enhances the overall aesthetic of your video, making it look well-composed and professional. It also ensures that your viewers are focused on you, rather than being distracted by an awkward frame.
CONCLUSION
