Five common mistakes to avoid during an interview as a hiring manager

Often, the interview phase plays a role in whether a candidate who is excited about a job or the chance to work for their dream company is put off by the experience. This can be due to the mannerisms of the interviewing managers or the overall interview experience itself.?

One common mistake that many hiring managers make is thinking that as they are the hiring company, they don’t have to put in much effort to attract the right talent for the role.?

Below are five points to keep in mind while preparing for and during an interview to avoid missing out on top talent:

  1. Dress to impress?

This does not only apply to the applicants but to the hiring managers as well. How the hiring manager presents themselves sets the tone for professionalism within the organisation. Dressing well enhances the manager’s professional image and reflects positively on the company’s culture and values.?

2.????? Reviewing the applicant’s resume or CV??

As much as the applicant has to prepare for interviewing with your company, you also have to prepare for interviewing the applicants. This is a fundamental step in the hiring process. It enables interviewers to tailor questions, verify qualifications, and conduct a more insightful and productive interview to make informed hiring decisions.?

3.????? Asking the right technical questions?

Asking the right technical questions is crucial for effectively evaluating the interviewee’s skills, validating qualifications, ensuring job fit, and ultimately making informed hiring decisions in technical roles. By not following a thorough targeted process then, you will not be able to make an informed decision when wanting to move to an offer stage. You may end up hiring the least fit applicant for the role, which in turn will affect team performance and overall organisational success.?

4.????? Don’t move on to the next questions without listening to the previous answers

Listening prevents the unintentional repetition of questions already addressed by the candidate. This not only saves time but also indicates that you are conducting a focused and efficient interview. It also shows that you take the interview seriously, respect the candidate’s time, and are committed to making well-informed hiring decisions.

5.????? Explaining the company vision and company culture properly

This will help potential employees to understand that they align with the company values, beliefs and working norms of the organisation. This is important for long-term job satisfaction and alignment.?

Next time you prepare for an interview, keep in mind that securing the ideal candidate for a role is as much the responsibility of the hiring manager as it is the applicant’s.?
