“Five Choices That Changed My Life—and How You Can Make Yours”

This week, I’ve found myself in some deep conversations with peers about decision-making. The more we talked, the more I realised how every single decision—big or small—creates ripple effects that shape the course of our lives. It’s easy to forget this in the moment, but when you take a step back, it becomes obvious: our choices define us.

So, let me ask you: What are the most important decisions you’ve made in your life?

When I reflect on this question, here’s what rises to the top for me:

  1. Deciding to go to university. It was the first big step toward shaping my independence and future.
  2. Deciding to move to Vancouver (from Ontario) to pursue my master’s degree. A leap of faith that stretched my comfort zone in every possible way.
  3. Deciding to teach English in Japan. Living and working in a culture so different from my own changed my worldview forever.
  4. Deciding to get married and move to Australia—one of the scariest, most spontaneous, and last-minute decisions I’ve ever made—and it’s the reason I’m here today. This one still scares me sometimes, but I know it was the right call because it brought me closer to living authentically.

Every single one of these choices was a moment of courage, a fork in the road that pushed me toward growth and self-discovery. And that’s the thing about decisions—they don’t just happen to you. They are the “force” that the universe provides in order to drive change. Without them, we stagnate.

If you’re feeling stuck right now, trapped in a loop of sameness, it might be time to ask yourself: When was the last time you climbed up the ladder and made a bold, original decision?

The Gift of Choice

Here’s the truth: they say that 'our ability to make decisions is one of the greatest gifts we have as humans'. It’s tied to self-awareness, and that’s what allows us to shape our lives, our relationships, and our happiness.

But let’s not sugarcoat it—making decisions isn’t always easy. And the decision itself is just the first step. The magic lies in what happens next.

Bold action. Quiet persistence. Or, let’s be honest, sometimes even inaction. Whatever follows a decision determines what grows from it.

What the Experts Say

Two incredible thought leaders, Ed Mylett and Alex Hormozi, offer powerful insights into the art of decision-making:

Ed Mylett’s Wisdom

  • Adopt a “One More” Mindset: Small efforts, repeated consistently, create massive results. One more call. One more attempt. One more step forward.
  • Act with Urgency: Don’t sit around waiting for the “perfect time”—it doesn’t exist.
  • Raise Your Standards: Let your decisions reflect the kind of life you want to live, not just short-term goals.
  • Believe in the Process: A clear vision, paired with faith in yourself, strengthens your ability to make even the toughest calls.

“You are always one decision away from a totally different life.”

Alex Hormozi’s Approach

  • Move Quickly, Adjust Later: Waiting for perfection leads to paralysis. Make the call, then refine as you go.
  • Think Long-Term: Consider opportunity costs—what matters most down the road, not just what feels good now.
  • Aim for “Good Enough”: Decisions don’t have to be flawless. “85% ready” is often more than enough to move forward.
  • Stay Logical: Emotions can cloud judgment. When the stakes are high, lean on data and logic.

“Inaction costs more than the wrong decision. At least when you move, you learn.”

It’s Time to Choose Boldly Here’s a little irony: I read this week that 'the one thing you can’t choose in life is the fact that you always have a choice'. How incredibly powerful is that - it moved me.

Your decisions shape your reality, but it’s the follow-through that determines the outcome. If you’ve been waiting for the perfect moment to make a bold move—this is your sign.

Take a moment to reflect on the decisions that have brought you here. What do you want next? What bold step will take you closer to the life you truly want?

One main question is what percentage of power do we have on decision making? What kind of decisions are most possible to be taken? or! Is it the “I” in the psyche make decisions?
