My 'Friday Five' today are books I'd recommend for those wishing to stimulate the creative senses, maybe discover some new ways of thinking, or get some fresh inspiration.
- Where Good Ideas Come From - Steven Johnson. The age old question of 'where do ideas come from?' is the focus of this book as it covers a number of great ideas and how they came to be and explains seven patterns at the core of some of the greatest ideas of our time.
- Lateral Thinking - Edward DeBono. This book changed my life as it helped me make sense of how my mind worked and how to better utilize the way I saw the world and the ideas that swam around in my head. There are some great exercises and valuable information for anyone wanting to use their mind for a creative living or to simply open up the ideas vault within.
- Steal Like An Artist - Austin Kleon. This is a fun yet insightful little book. It may help demystify the creative life and process for some.
- Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience - Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. I first read this book back in 1991 and have re-read it a couple of times since. Throughly recommend it for those looking at how best to maintain a productive creative state of mind when needed.
- Daily Rituals: How Great Minds Make Time, Find Inspiration, and Get to Work - Mason Currey. At times it can help to unearth how other creative minds go about finding their ideas and bringing their work to life. This book does just that and gives you a behind the scenes look at the day to day lives of some great creative minds.
There are of course many more, but these would be a good start for anyone seeking some new inspiration, stimulation, or motivation. So please get thee to a book shop if you still have one in your city/town (I am fortunate to have a great one 5 minutes from my front door) or do as most do and hop online or even just head to the library. Whatever path you choose I hope you find some new ways of thinking between the pages.
If you have some great creative book recommendations then please post them in the comments below, thanks.

6 年I've got more books than most girls have shoes. Here's 3 of my favourites: 1: A SMILE IN THE MIND by Beryl McAlhone and David Stuart. Witty thinking in graphic design. If you can elicit a smile in someone's mind - you win. A wonderful bible of visual engagement. 2: THE ART OF LOOKING SIDEWAYS by Alan Fletcher. A mighty tome of visual ephemera, anecdotes, quotes, illustration & design. It's so substantial, it takes literally weeks/months to read & absorb it all - by which time you're ready to start again. It's so thick & heavy it also makes a great weapon. 3: IT'S NOT HOW GOOD YOU ARE, IT'S HOW GOOD YOU WANT TO BE by Paul Arden. The late great Paul Arden was briefly my Creative Director at Saatchis in London and this warm, witty & wonderful insight into his incredible mind & history of his work is pure inspiration.
