Fitting the pieces to build greener solutions

Fitting the pieces to build greener solutions

To VMS Group, going green is all about supporting our customers in their efforts to comply with the increasing demand for carbon footprint reduction - a reduction sought and enabled in every part of making a ship sail.

The CII rules taking effect in 2023 aim at reducing carbon intensity by 40% by 2030 and by 70% by 2050.

Some shipowners will seek to comply by adopting either engine power limitation (EPL) or shaft power limitation (ShaPoLi), which in short means reducing sailing speed. Not the ideal solution in a competitive and fast-moving world.

VMS Group supports our customers with our extensive expertise and knowledge of diesel engines to help reduce carbon emissions and optimize the efficiency of the propulsion systems we offer.

Being an authorized channel partner of Wabtec engines, we are given a perfect platform for our system optimization strategy, as the Wabtec engine is one of the most fuel-efficient engines on the market while certified to IMO III without the use of SCR exhaust after-treatment and urea injection.

In addition, the Wabtec engine allows for increased use of waste heat recovery, which means the use of excess energy to heat up water to power other systems on board: Heating system (HVAC Heating), Ballast Water Treatment, Air-condition, Fresh Water Generation and Excess electricity (ORCAN Energy). These systems are traditionally powered by electricity, which means more electricity must be generated. With our Heat and Water to Power (HWtP) solutions, this extra electricity can be omitted, thereby saving energy and CO2.??

The vision of our HWtP approach is to offer tailor-made module-based solutions for each ship, as the optimal configuration depends on specific factors and operational variables. As an example, air-condition requirements are much higher in warm climates than in colder climates…

One clear benefit of building this module-based solution is the possibility of installing it over a period of time to fit with the needs and schedule of the customer, both for new-build vessels and retrofit projects.
