The fitting of all face masks must be demonstrated by a Trained Occupational Therapist

It appears we pay top dollar for Dust masks KN-95’s and drug money on air feed painting masks but no one has ever been shown the correct way of putting them on. Nor has a record of this training kept on file as a defence if a painter was to fall ill for isocyanate poisoning.

The KN-95 is a real problem as it be because of Fumes or cutting dust and if they are ill-fitted there is no protection. Fines are being issued in ACT and SA.

Ensuring the correct fitting and usage of face masks, particularly in potentially hazardous environments, is of utmost importance for the safety and well-being of workers, such as painters exposed to isocyanate fumes. To address the lack of proper training and documentation in this regard, it is crucial to implement a comprehensive program that includes the following elements:

  1. Training Program: Establish a formal training program for all workers who are required to wear face masks, such as Dust masks KN-95's for general protection and air feed painting masks for specific tasks like handling isocyanate-containing paints. The training should be conducted by a Trained Occupational Therapist (OT) or a certified safety professional who possesses expertise in respiratory protection.

  1. Demonstrations and Practical Sessions: The training should include practical demonstrations of how to correctly fit and use each type of face mask. Workers must be shown step-by-step instructions on putting on the masks properly to ensure a tight seal and adequate protection.

  1. Individual Fit Testing: Consider implementing fit testing procedures to ensure that each worker's mask fits them correctly and securely. Fit testing can help identify if a mask is not suitable for a particular individual and help them find an appropriate alternative.

  1. Documentation and Record-Keeping: Maintain detailed records of the training sessions, including the date of training, the name of the OT or safety professional who conducted the training, and the names of the workers who attended. This documentation serves as evidence that adequate training was provided in the event of any legal or health-related issues.

  1. Regular Refresher Training: Schedule regular refresher training sessions to reinforce the importance of proper mask fitting and usage. Respiratory protection practices may evolve over time, and workers should stay up-to-date with the latest guidelines and best practices.

  1. Compliance and Enforcement: Make it a requirement for all workers to undergo the training and wear the appropriate face masks during relevant tasks. Enforce the policy consistently and address any non-compliance issues promptly.

  1. Collaboration with Occupational Health Specialists: Work in collaboration with occupational health specialists to establish a comprehensive safety plan, including exposure monitoring, health surveillance, and prompt medical attention for workers who may have been exposed to hazardous substances.

  1. Transparent Communication: Ensure clear and transparent communication with workers about the importance of wearing face masks correctly and the potential consequences of failing to do so. Workers should understand the risks associated with improper mask usage and feel motivated to comply with safety protocols.

By implementing a comprehensive training program and maintaining proper records, the company can demonstrate its commitment to worker safety, compliance with regulations, and responsibility for protecting its employees from potential health hazards. This proactive approach can significantly reduce the risk of incidents related to improper face mask usage, such as isocyanate poisoning among painters.
