fitter_happier_working at a job you love (tolerate)

Now if you didn’t say this in your head with an AI stop-start robot voice, you’ve already closed this article down and I can proceed to my core demographic… weirdos like me.

?

As a 13 year old when I first heard this song (christ I’m old), this was a skippable track, “play LET DOWN again!”.? But now that I’m a grown up (lol) with my own litany of worries and potential remedies to life, I bring myself back to this unsettling AF song that is, like a lot of Radiohead’s catalogue, a grower that turns into perfection and actually gives me something to think about every time I hear or think about it by doing a self-assessment on what’s working, what’s not working and what is actually important in my life and not someone else’s.

?

There are some things in life that we can’t help and just have to deal with.? It’s hard, it’s frustrating, it’s a lot to take at times.? And a list of so called remedies to potentially help can usually just add more things to worry about.? But there are some things we can change and working at a company you enjoy or at the very least, can tolerate, is worth making a change for.

?

I can remember the feeling at the end of a bad day, at the end of a bad week, at the end of a bad month, when you have the debate with yourself.

"Why am I driving an hour to work every day?"
“Why am I getting home when my kids are already in bed?”
“Why am I paying a toll?”
“Why am I still doing the same role that I’ve been doing the last 5 years?”
“I wonder if other companies have WFH as an option some days?”
“I wonder if another company would be ok if I started earlier so I could leave in time to take the kids to sport or pick them up from school?”
“Am I ready to be a manager”
“Could I be getting paid more somewhere else?”
“Maybe I’ll call David at Pace to see what’s out there.? He’s a weirdo, but he does seem to know what he’s talking about, at least some of the time.? Man, I hope he doesn’t bring up Radiohead!”
Yeah David, it's new job time!

To this day, I still make a PRO/CON list when thinking about making such decisions and I recommend this to any candidates I am talking to when it comes to leaving or staying at a job.

?

Sometimes it’s just as easy to chat to your manager and you find that all the frustrations you had can be fixed and you can stay where you are, awesome!

Other times, you’ve given all options a try and ultimately, the PROCON list is telling you it’s time to find a new company to be happier, at least in your working life.

If you’ve exhausted all options with your current employer and you know it’s time to find something new, or just want to discuss the brilliance of Radiohead in a less contrived way, give David a call on 0457 000 647 or email [email protected]
