4 Great Ways to Achieve Your Fitness Goals

Do you set fitness goals for yourself? Do you have a hard time achieving them?

If both of those answers are yes, then read further.

Fitness goals are important in several ways.

They hold us accountable, keep us motivated, and encourage us to push ourselves through temporary discomfort for longer-lasting change.

Here’s how to set goals you’ll actually stick to:

  1. Focus on one goal at a time. Maybe you want to go to the gym every day, cut out processed foods, and minimize your TV time. Trying to tackle that much at one time is guaranteeing that you fail at accomplishing at least one of those goals. You may feel anxious if you don’t achieve one of your goals and essentially throw them all away.
  2. Make sure you “own” your goal. In a world saturated with advertisements and social media, it is easy to try to have a goal to be like someone else. The goal you set for yourself should be based on YOU. It should excite you and you should know that you’ll realistically be able to achieve it.
  3. Make it measurable and time-bound. Wanting to be stronger is a great goal to have, but what does that mean to you? By saying you want to be able to do more sit-ups makes the goal measurable and by saying you want to do 40 sit-ups in one minute makes it specific. By having measurable and time-bound goals, you’ll be able to formulate a great plan to accomplish them.
  4. Adopt a long-term mentality. You’re not likely to accomplish your goal in one week, but you can make small steps toward accomplishing it in one week. By thinking long-term, you’ll be able to see your goal as a lifestyle change rather than a quick fix, and you’ll be more likely to adhere to it.

Consider a Professional’s Input

If you’re having a hard time determining what would be a good goal for your current fitness level, then it may be helpful to consult with a certified personal trainer.

They will ask questions about your current lifestyle and perform fitness tests to determine what your current fitness level is in addition to helping you form goals.
