Let's get your year started with some positive news ??
Building a cycling culture in Paris ????
Picture dozens of kids with helmets riding along the streets. Now let's move into the future, where these kids are adults who enjoy using bicycles as their preferred way of travelling.
Across France, efforts are underway to inspire a love of cycling in younger generations. Over 500,000 children have been trained to ride confidently and navigate makeshift roads. It’s part of an ambitious national initiative to equip the next generation with the skills to safely navigate streets on two wheels. The goal? Healthier, more independent, and lower-carbon lifestyles for the youth of France. ???
Since 2019, the Savoir Rouler à Vélo ("Know How to Bike") has been teaching cycling skills to kids aged 6 to 11 through a 10-week course. With plans to reach 850,000 children annually by 2027.

Predicting And Preventing A Plague ??????
Like something out of a biblical tale, desert #locusts swarm in vast numbers, leaving destruction in their wake. A single swarm covering just one square kilometre can destroy enough food in one that can feed about 35,000 people.
But a team from the University of Cambridge has developed a groundbreaking method to predict when and where these pests will swarm. It will give people a chance to stop them before disaster strikes. ???
Using weather data from the UK Met Office and advanced computer models, they will be able to show where the insects are likely to move next as they search for food and breeding areas, allowing affected regions to be treated with pesticides before the swarms arrive.
Desert locusts are the world’s most destructive migratory pest, especially for small-scale farmers in Africa and Asia. They can travel long distances across borders, making their control vital for food security worldwide.

Martial Arts For Young Girls In Mumbai ????
Free workshops, girls gain martial arts skills while building self-confidence. They also explore important topics like communication and consent, empowering them in every aspect of life. It's been designed to help young women feel empowered to protect themselves.
India ranks a 127 out of 146 countries in the 2023 Global Gender Gap Report, based on factors like education, economic opportunities, and health. Even more concerning is the ongoing violence against women, which takes many forms— from domestic abuse and assault to dowry deaths, acid attacks, and everyday street harassment. https://mukkamaar.org/

This Week's Solution Seeker...
In Memory Of Dora Nyambe ??
In 2019, Dora Moono Nyambe visited Mapapa, a village in Zambia, and was heartbroken by the number of children out of school and the high rates of early marriage and teen pregnancies. At 27, with five adopted children of her own, she moved to the village and faced many challenges, including skepticism from locals and a termite-infested mud hut. But she stayed, founded Footprints of Hope and started a school.
Over time, her efforts began to change lives. She created a safe space for 350 children offering not just education, but accommodation, food and protection from child marriage and abuse. Despite facing hardship and often lacking support, her unwavering dedication continued to transform the community, one child at a time.
Dora was a true champion of change and hope. Her life was suddenly cut short but the hope is that her work and legacy will live on. Nothing takes away from the impact she has had on the lives of many children and people in her community.

Working with Nature ??
Rewiggling A River ??
Haweswater in the Lake District, England, is an area of stunning natural beauty but over the years it’s been degraded by humans and livestock. This has created flood risks and reduced biodiversity. But now work is underway to restore the site to benefit both people and the environment. Rivers have been ‘re-wiggled’, peat bogs repaired, and new trees planted.
What to do with Christmas trees ? ??
Millions of trees are cut down for Christmas every year. While more and more people are choosing alternative decorative types of reusable trees, others are finding clever ways of repurposing them! ??
Some folks are rescuing used Christmas trees from landfills and using them to help prevent river banks from eroding. It's a simple but brilliant idea that's making a huge difference in protecting landscapes from floods, while also giving life back to our rivers! ??????
?? Christmas for Elephants...
In Berlin, though, those that weren’t used or sold are fed to elephants in the New Year. It’s become an annual ritual that means the trees don’t end up rotting away. I suppose the main argument here is to stop cutting down these trees, but in places like Canada, which are big exporters of natural Christmas trees, there needs to be ideas on how to manage this. https://apnews.com/article/germany-berlin-zoo-christmas-trees-elephants-feeding-c360d6f10f837185fbb4dd0b36830732
