1.?????? This Week's Hot Tips

So, I received another panicked call…

One of my mentees confessed that she felt like she was drowning at work. I gently nudged with a few questions to get a better understanding.? I listened thoughtfully and exercised restraint to not jump in and solve the problem.

Here’s the gist, my mentee was recently promoted to her first people manager role. While she had a handle on the day-to-day, she felt overwhelmed by the new workstream created by the performance review process. In our conversation, it dawned on her that she had never been on this side of the process.

As we delved deeper into her concerns, it became clear that she lacked a roadmap for navigating these crucial conversations, documenting effectively, and setting her team up for future success.

I asked her if she would like my thoughts. Here’s what I suggested:

  • Seek Guidance from HR: Remember, it's perfectly okay to ask for help, especially when it's about understanding the nuances of a new process. Reach out to your HR Business Partner early on, not just hours before your deadline. They're there to support you, offering insights into company policies, and helping you align with best practices.
  • Prepare Thoroughly: Before diving into the reviews, take time to review each team member's past performance, set clear objectives for the meeting, and familiarize yourself with their recent achievements and challenges. This preparation not only helps you provide more meaningful feedback but also shows your team that you value and respect their efforts.
  • Focus on Strengths and Growth Areas: It's essential to balance your feedback. While addressing areas for improvement, don't forget to acknowledge and celebrate your team member's strengths. This approach not only boosts morale but also encourages a culture of continuous development and positive reinforcement.

What are some of your suggestions for a new people manager conducting their first performance reviews?

5. Ask Keita:

Q: Hello Keita,

I just conducted my first round of performance reviews as a new leader. I am exhausted from the process. Any tips to make it better next year?

Signed,

First time for everything

A: Dear First Time for Everything,

I would suggest taking a longer view of the performance evaluation. Essentially, put systems in place so you are checking in consistently and track progress throughout the year, so it is less of a lift come review time.

In addition to our upcoming on-demand course launch with O’Reilly Media on February 8th, we offer a comprehensive suite of corporate training programs focused on goal setting, mastering the performance review process, and fostering authenticity-based accountability.
