1. Sign up with a realtor, you will get more information when you sign up with a realtor as opposed to casual conversation. They can get you the resources that you need. I.e a referral to a lender- a lender can make or break your closing and buying of a home. 
2. Choose a lender, sit down with them to go over the exact monthly cost that you feel comfortable spending per month on your payments. 

3. Begin your search, narrow down how far from work you would like to travel to and from, location, schools you would like your children to be in (if applicable), floor plans you may like, etc. Also you don't have to have all the answers, your realtor can help you with your search and held educate you  and help you to narrow down what you would like in your dream home.
