When taking the plunge into the world of work and starting your career, feelings of trepidation are not uncommon. But Lidya Tesfatsion ( Lidya Tesfatsion ), Junior Credit Administrator at high-end automotive finance provider JBR Capital, conquered her nerves, and as a result, her journey from intern to a full-time team member has been one full of learning.
Lidya joined the business through Talent Rise, a charity that JBR Capital works closely with to break down barriers to employment and give young people like Lidya the chance to recognise and reach their potential.
Can you start by telling us about your role at JBR Capital?
“I joined JBR Capital as an intern in July of this year, and I am now a Junior Credit Administrator. I work closely with the client services team and the underwriters to make sure that we have all the relevant and up-to-date information for our customers, as well as making any necessary changes to their agreements. For example, if a customer wants to change their existing car and finance a different one, we connect the dots with our teams to make that happen as seamlessly as possible for them.”
How did you learn about JBR Capital, and how has your role here developed from your time as an intern?
“I initially heard about JBR Capital through Talent Rise, who steered me towards the internship, which has transitioned seamlessly into my current role. My training has continued, which has enabled me to develop my skills and knowledge while taking on more responsibility.”
What have been the highlights of your time here at JBR Capital?

“A standout project for me involved collating a list of our customers who are elite sportspeople. We wanted to make sure that all of their information was up to date, in preparation for any possible changes to their agreement, for example, if they were a footballer who moved to a new team and needed to make changes to their agreement. It was really interesting to learn our processes while working on a cool and intriguing subject.
“Another of the highlights of working here at JBR Capital is the culture and environment. Whereas at school, I constantly felt under pressure, it’s not like that here. You can ask for help without feeling nervous - everyone is so welcoming and helpful. This makes it so much easier to get to know people on a personal level, which makes working together more fun.”
What kind of initiatives does JBR Capital put in place to bring its teams closer together?
“I’ve found our town hall meetings really useful, they’re an opportunity for everyone to come together and ask questions about the business. It’s set up really well so we can all keep updated with what’s going on in the business. We can also submit anonymous questions, which is a great way to have honest conversations about our work and encourages everyone to get involved.
“We also do a lot as a team outside of work. Whenever a new colleague joins the team, we’ll go out for lunch, which is a great way of making them feel comfortable and part of the company.
“I still remember how nervous I was on my first day and how welcome everyone made me feel. So now it’s nice to now be able to do the same thing for my new colleagues.”
