First step of doing good – doubt your actions

“True leaders never doubt their actions.”
“Those who have doubt, get left behind.”
The list of such nice quotes from motivational speakers can go on. We hear them in every other video (sometimes while getting bored of these repetitive lectures). Makes us feel lesser if we doubt our actions, before or even in the aftermath.
This is another classic example of the misleading narratives that are getting ingrained in our thoughts, by such motivational ‘coaches’, who have low to no formal training in what they do (much like the dieticians and mental health ‘experts’, but that a story for another day).
The fact is that only those who are content with (or wish for) negative consequences would not have doubts about what they do. They will have total confidence in actions or dicta while leading a team. Does that mean they are always right? No. It means that they simply do not care! They are happy to apologise if consequences go the wrong way, though the apology does not roll back the damage.
What about doubt?
Embracing doubt can add a valuable and constructive aspect to our lives. It helps us have mitigations ready, in case anything goes downhill. It certainty provides a sense of security and a natural counterbalance to unwavering certainty, that leads to growth, exploration, and a deeper understanding of the world around us before we jump into action. In a nutshell, it helps us plan better.
Isn’t it funny that the same motivational speakers say that work is 90% planning and 10% execution, but in different lectures? And they can, since our memory is short!

It's important to recognize that doubt doesn't necessarily indicate weakness or indecision; instead, it can be a catalyst for intellectual curiosity and personal development.
What should leaders do?
To each their own. I am not one to prescribe here. But there are a few pointers on which I have no ‘doubt’:
But, as every rule would have it, this also comes with a word of caution. Being in doubt does not necessarily mean abandoning our principles or values. It just encourages a thoughtful and discerning approach to our convictions. By regularly evaluating and reassessing our belief system, we keep it relevant and aligned with the ever-evolving world.
Hence a small request, before I end this note.
Keep doubting your actions, but never have any doubt about yourself.
