This was my CHANCE! Get there early and outthink, run, lift, and shoot everybody.
"Hey Coach, did you see I beat Mike on suicides and before that popped six threes in a row?"
Coach just blankly said, "No, that couldn't have happened."
Mike didn't run. Instead, he smoothly glided over the floor in a flash past us all since the start of the season, so obviously Coach didn't think even the first part was possible.
Then it hit me that Coach was conveniently ignoring what was going on - always ducking into the hall to spit in a trash can from the constant huge dip or whatever.
He might as well have punch me in the gut knocking the wind out of me.
Some poor, handicapped kid with straight A's would have other opportunities. This wasn't a charity and taller and younger guys would make a better championship team without the spectacle.
It was a huge life lesson. You can do everything right and people might not accept the win, but you know what happened and leave them behind.
