In the dynamic landscape of modern work environments, teams are increasingly dispersed, relying on various communication platforms and technologies to collaborate effectively. Whether your team is fully remote, hybrid, or in the office, establishing clear agreements can significantly enhance productivity, cohesion, and satisfaction. Amidst the myriad of challenges, creating these six fundamental team agreements can provide a robust framework for success.
Communication?
Establish appropriate communication protocols – what to use, and when to use it. This includes email, text, phone, video, Slack channels, etc. Be sure to consider the level of risk for misunderstandings and the level of trust in your relationship before you choose. (include misunderstandings graphic here)
Connection?
Create connection agreements that outline a cadence for personal connection individually and as a team. When getting started with remote work, social connection time is one of the most valuable tools to build a strong team.?
Conflict?
Determine how your team will manage conflicts and disagreements before they escalate. Discuss what is acceptable and not acceptable during conflict and agree on those behaviors as a team.?

Meetings?
Create expectations and rules around meetings. Best practices include sharing the leadership role, creating and distributing agendas ahead of time, establishing when it’s appropriate to have cameras on, setting expectations for participation levels, and sharing how to use collaborative tools to engage.?
Technology?
Establish the technology tools your team will use for tracking time, project progress, team updates, messaging, document security, etc. Streamline your use of tech tools whenever possible and ensure everyone is using them consistently.?
Availability?
Determine service level agreements (SLAs) for response times and turnaround on deliverables which may take longer when virtual. Be sure to establish boundaries to ensure that people don’t feel that they have to always be “on.”?
Fostering a culture of transparency, respect, and accountability through these six team agreements can be transformative for any organization, regardless of its size or industry. By prioritizing communication, connection, conflict resolution, meeting efficiency, technology optimization, and availability, teams can navigate the complexities of remote work with confidence and cohesion. Embrace these agreements as living documents, subject to periodic review and refinement, to adapt to the evolving needs and dynamics of your team. As you embark on this journey of intentional collaboration, remember that building a strong foundation today lays the groundwork for success tomorrow.
