The first review of Birds of Different Feathers
Ampat Koshy
Assistant Professor at Department of English Mount Carmel Autonomous College Bengaluru
"Human nature has been the same in all the ages as is evident from the writings of great poets and novelists of all times.
The difference lies mainly in what the society focusses on. The world we live in today is different because the matters that concern us more are not the same as they were a hundred years ago.
'Birds of different feathers' written and edited by Dr.Koshy promises a unique experience for lovers of poetry. It is not only a reflection of the human condition of our times but it seeks to teach and direct, feel and tell , make us happy as well as sad, also surprising and warning us in many ways. The subtleties of emotions are beautiful because of their simple words and images. That there are layers of meaning and the depth in his poems goes a long way in making him a poet to reckon with.
He doesn't spare humans and their follies and having used birds as metaphors brings out the stark contrast between what we have made ourselves to become while we could have been happy being content in our simple naturalness.
For instance, he writes:
"When birds tweet
It is sweet
When human beings speak
It's often just irritating, like a pestilential rat's squeak. "
Although as a romantic, one misses the blithe spirit of the skylark, yet , when he describes the ethereal beauty of the white owl or the red-eyed doves juxtaposed with aching love , one is mesmerized .
The other themes that adorn Dr.Koshy's inimitable style are freedom, separation, passion, death, soaring high and overcoming the filth below, exploring the real meaning of life, love and living in varied hues.
One can go on and on as there is so much loaded in this thin book that you would regret you missed reading it.
A book to be kept on the bedside for a long time.
A must read.
