THE FIRST QUESTION YOU SHOULD ASK YOURSELF

THE FIRST QUESTION YOU SHOULD ASK YOURSELF

What do geocientist do in the oil industry?

It is obvious, but the goal of any business is to earn money. An important aspect for this is to define the uncertainties and quantify the risk.

These two key actions are what define the importance of geologists in this industry, given the knowledge we have about natural systems. The uncertainty is a known element which may have unexpected behavior. On the other hand, the risk is the probability that a given option will occur.

The geological knowledge applied to the data allows, among others, seismic interpretation, well correlation, recognize petrophysical parameters with rocks and fluids and finally from all these considerations build models.

Thus, the participation of geoscientists in the oil & gas industry becomes very important to defining the variables and assessing the geological risk of a project. It means, the contribution provided by the seasoned geoscientists is a very valuable strategic resource to improving the conditions of a project, obtaining economic advantages and improving the profitability of the business.

Although there will always be black swans swimming in the pond and in next text we talk about it.

What do you think?

Marcos? Let me have another comment: you said "the contribution provided by the seasoned geoscientists is a very valuable strategic resource to improving the conditions of a project, obtaining economic advantages and improving the profitability of the business. " I fully agree on this. This is a very positive statement.? What about its "dark face " ?? Any attempt at trying to reduce cost at the expenses of letting the ignorance develop (reducing training cost is always fashionable!) , any attempt at saving a few bucks at the expense of missing information (cutting logging and coring costs...etc, that is very very fashionable), any attempt at saving a few bucks at the expense of demotivating employees....(so common!!!) Here are only but a few aspects of deteriorating profitability of the business. Usually the geoscientists are not at their origin, but they are always the one to be blamed because they are in forefront....(not in the background and counting bucks). If a geoscientist has been shown to be ignorant of the proper method to use , who should be blamed ? Who missed to detect the ignorance ? Who was greedy enough to let the situation develop ?? BTW have a look at this :?https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00031305.2016.1154108.? The very first lines tell a very interesting story.? Ph?

Simple, but thought and discussion provoking article.

Hello Marcos,? Very good text and the final metaphora. If I understood well, as geologist we are in a kind of limbo between industry and the pure science. At least it is what your text makes me wonder. What I see is that, in a way the university prepares us to be scientist without a economic and applied focus that engeneers are traineed for. On the other hand, after a while our work in the industry becames disconnected with the pure science that the academy appreciate or require. However, most of the geologist have this neediness to make science, to investigate more, and the oil and gas industry times does not allowed. I believe that more and more the industry and the university are trying to adjust this gap in order to make this communication more fluid. The I & D (research and development) projects and departments are proving the importance of pure science to industry and applied science to the university, with this synergy everybody wins.

Marcos, About your definition of uncertainty: "The uncertainty is a known element which may have unexpected behavior." I would see it differently. The nature is very deterministic. Its behavior cannot be unexpected if we know the nature then deterministic laws can be formulated.? deterministic laws have been set in the past and continue to be set whenever we reach a sufficient level of knowledge of a "part" of nature.?? What causes the uncertainty is our lack of knowledge of an "element" of nature. Pretending we know the nature is the greatest cause of uncertainty. This happen almost every time the geoscientists use methods requiring their users to set up parameters independently of the data.? The risk is somehow the product of our ignorance by the importance and significance of the element of the nature we ignore be it deliberately or not.? Philippe?
