First Newsletter 2025: Ready for high level challenges in the coming year?!
Elise Sijthoff
Amplifying children's voices and enabling them to participate actively in the world they live in
Have you ever wondered who you can learn from? We’re finding out. What about you?
As we kick off 2025, we’re looking back at everything we’ve done and looking forward to what’s next.?
Since 2017, we at ChildPress have been given the tools and platform to make real change, for every child in town.
ChildPress helps us create our own news and talk about the issues that matter to us, whether that’s close to home or across the world. It starts in familiar places, like our home, classrooms or libraries. With support from local journalists, we learn how to investigate, research, and tell the stories that matter most.
Over the years, we’ve worked on 33 editions of magazines and countless of interviews in 9 different countries, and we’ve seen amazing results. For example, when our stories helped get youth voices included at the UNESCO World Press Freedom conference in New York (2022) and Chile (2023), and in Norway where our reporter influenced the government to change the law. Through ChildPress, we get to lead our own investigations, run a media organization, and interview decision-makers from all over.?
From our website, as our basis, we serve school newspapers and local and national prints.?
We look forward to creating a worldwide network among children who have a joint mission to understand who does what for children. In the last year, we have already seen such communities emerge in Nepal and Nigeria.?
ChildPress flips the traditional way of news. Instead of adults talking about what’s important to children, we take charge and report on what’s important to us. It’s our voices, our stories, and our change.
In the Netherlands ChildPress will kickstart the year at the National Education Exhibition (NOT) in Utrecht from January 21 to 26 (you can find the invite link at the bottom of this newsletter).
At the exhibition, we will help Dutch school teachers see and make connections between language and societal subjects with school journalism and children’s rights. In doing so, help them to set up school newspapers, editorials boards and train journalistic skills.?
At the same time, we’ll launch our first editorial year toward the Children’s 500. The C500 will be the common thread of what our reporters will cover, answering the question: who does what for children? In the C500 yearbook, we’ll invite nominated professionals to expert meetings and follow them throughout the year to see the real impact they’re making for children, each in different ways.
We look forward to sharing the progress of ChildPress and all our reporters with you in the coming year!
