The First Marshall Ministry
The first Liberal ministry in sixteen years will be sworn in today after Premier Steven Marshall’s historic election victory last Saturday, which saw him secure majority government.
Treasurer Rob Lucas is the only member of the new team to have served in Cabinet before. His experience will make him a key central figure for all major decisions at the bottleneck of government, which is always the treasury.
The new streamlined set of portfolios will be matched with a restructured public service, where Department Chief Executives will only report to one minister to improve accountability. The public service changes commenced yesterday when four department heads were sacked including Chief Executives from the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Transport, Environment and Attorney-Generals. It will be interesting to see who their replacements will be and whether they are drawn from Canberra, interstate or the private sector.
Vickie Chapman becomes the first ever female Deputy Premier and Attorney-General alongside two other women in Cabinet, Rachel Sanderson in Child Protection and Michelle Lensink in the Human Services portfolio.
David Pisoni has a newly created role combining industry with skills. Formal oversight of TAFE will remain within the education portfolio under new minister John Gardner.
Trade and Investment has been partnered with Tourism in a new portfolio for Legislative Council leader David Ridgeway.
The other major promotion is for Barossa based MP Stephan Knoll who will take on the Transport, Infrastructure and Planning portfolio.
The defence and space industries portfolios have been taken on by Premier Steven Marshall.
The re-elected Member for Hartley Vincent Tarzia will become the Speaker in recognition of his efforts to hold off the challenge from Nick Xenophon.
Cabinet will now meet twice weekly. The first official Cabinet Meeting will take place next week.
