Although making up a small percentage in the industry, Black women have been showing?up as trailblazers in leadership roles. Earlier this month the NFL saw the first-ever Black female president. Sandra Douglas Morgan has been announced as the president of the Las Vegas Raiders. This historic move makes her the first Black woman in the league's 102-year history to hold this role. This milestone achievement happened 2 years after former player, Jason Wright, became the first Black president in the league's history.
Morgan had this to say about her current achievements –?
“I have been the first in other positions that I’ve held, whether it be city attorney or the Gaming Control Board. I definitely never want to be the last, and I want to get to a point obviously where there is no more first”.
It is never too late for representation to make an impact on one's career, dreams, or ambitions. If you don't see yourself represented in a league, industry, or role, take that as an opportunity to occupy that space. Be your biggest fan and don't ever sell yourself short. Just because you haven't seen it or don't have a point of reference doesn’t mean it’s impossible. There’s only one of you and there’s always a first for everything.?
Shout out to all the “First evers” and all the Black women taking up space!
