The first lessons when starting out

The first lessons when starting out

Last week I was recognised as one of Australia’s Young Rich Listers by the Australian Financial Review. It was the third and final time I’ll be on the list – I’m not so young anymore – and every time it always makes me stop and reflect on why my name is on this list.

I’m incredibly proud and humbled by what we have achieved as a business and I wouldn’t operate the way I do today without the lessons I learnt from incredible people at the beginning of my journey.

So it was fitting to talk about some of these learnings with Adam Schwab, the founder of Luxury Escapes, on his epic podcast From Zero.

I shared some of the most gruelling times when Ciao and I were just starting out. Like the time I started building websites for people and had a falling out with my mother and moved out. I was literally sleeping on the floor of Ciao’s bedroom until we rented a bigger place.?

These were the moments that I love because I learnt so much from every single one of them. So here are some of my favourites:

1. Marketing is about studying and understanding human behaviour

I was taught to watch how people see the world and their emotions, how they determine their buying decisions, and how to speak to people.

2. People see the world differently

People think about the world differently and people don't actually see the same world. They have different paradigms. And there are heuristics built into humanity.?

3. Ask people what they want and give it to them

Listen to your customers. Ask them what they want from your business and what problems they want to solve.?
