First and Last Game?

2024 Highlight – The Joys of Team Sports (Even When Playing with Dad)

On Saturday, 21st December 2024, a rather special milestone was achieved. My twins and I took to the rugby pitch together for the first (and possibly last) annual ‘Dads and Lads’ rugby game at Farnham R.U.F.C. – an event that’s as much about bruised egos for dads as it is about celebrating the vigor of youth.

While one twin stormed across the line for a try and the other pulled off a last-ditch tackle to save one, dad’s contribution? Dropping the ball in spectacularly ungraceful fashion! Still, a proud fatherly moment if ever there was one.

It’s been quite the journey. The twins first picked up a rugby ball as under 5s back in 2012, on the hallowed turf of the newly built ‘Wilkinson Way’ clubhouse – a constant (and slightly cheeky) nod to that World Cup drop goal. Yes, the Aussie is rolling his eyes, but we can all agree it’s a cracking venue.

Rugby, as they say, builds character. I wholeheartedly echo the sentiment: playing this great game fosters self-confidence, respect, discipline, and a kind of mental toughness that’s invaluable as kids grow up. The camaraderie, sense of purpose, and sheer joy of being part of a team? Utterly priceless.

And let me humbly add this: for those parents hardy enough to keep their boots on long enough to play alongside their kids, there’s a unique pride and gratitude that’s difficult to put into words. (Even if you’re dropping the ball more than you’d like!)

Here’s to the beautiful chaos of rugby, to dads and lads, and to all the lessons this glorious game continues to teach us in this upcoming 50th year of Farnham R.U.F.C.
