First Impressions and Making Connections: Lessons from a Group of 8th Graders

You never know where the right introduction might take you. Just recently, I had the opportunity to speak to a group of 8th graders at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem—all thanks to a connection in my network.
Every time an opportunity like this comes my way, it’s a reminder of why staying top of mind as my network’s go-to for making things happen is a powerful position to be in.
When you stay connected, deliver on what you promise, and consistently show up, people remember you. That’s why I’m so passionate about teaching others how to build and maintain the right relationships. Opportunities come my way because I’ve positioned myself as a reliable resource—someone who steps up and brings value when and where it matters most. That’s what it means to have a network that works for you.
The Power of Impressions and Authenticity
So, how did I connect with these kids? We dove into something that impacts every single one of us, no matter how young or experienced we are: the power of first impressions and how to present yourself authentically. It might sound straightforward, but trust me—there’s a lot more to it.
I didn’t show up to preach (this time). Instead, I started with a question we’ve all wrestled with: How do you express who you are without saying a word?
It’s worth thinking about because people start forming opinions in less than 7 seconds of seeing you. And here’s the thing: that doesn’t change whether you’re a teen stepping into a classroom or an adult stepping into a meeting room. Your style, body language, and presence either help tell your story—or completely misrepresent it.
3 Lessons on Making Impressions That Stick
Here’s a quick rundown of what we covered:

How This Applies to Your Network
Talking to those teens reminded me that we’re all navigating identity shifts, no matter our age or experience level. The way we present ourselves evolves over time, but the principles stay the same. Just like showing up for these 8th graders, showing up in your network works in a similar way—be visible, be valuable, and stay top of mind as their go-to person for what you do best.
When people see you consistently showing up as the best version of yourself, they think of you when opportunities arise. That’s why my network works for me—and why I’m passionate about helping you make your network work for you, too.
Final Takeaway: Show Up with Intention
The next time you’re stepping into a new space or meeting someone for the first time, ask yourself:
Whether it’s your personal style or the value you bring to a conversation, showing up intentionally is where it all starts.
