First Impressions: How to Make Every Moment Count

First Impressions: How to Make Every Moment Count

By: Ryan DuBois

Ever imagine what it’d be like to meet someone you really admire? Picture how you’d get ready—what you’d wear, how you’d act, and the words you’d carefully choose.

This isn’t just daydreaming...

It shows how important first impressions are and how they stick with us long after that initial moment.

Why First Impressions Matter

First impressions happen fast—like, within seconds. But those few seconds can shape the future of any relationship. Whether you’re in a job interview, mingling at a networking event, or just bumping into someone new, that first impression says a lot about who you are.

It’s your chance to show your personality, values and professionalism without saying a word.

As Reid Hoffman puts it in The Start-Up of You,

"You are the CEO of your own career."

Think of every first impression as your personal brand’s launch—one that you’re in charge of.

Consistency is Everything

Nailing that first impression is great, but it doesn’t stop there. The real magic is in keeping it up. Consistency in how you interact with people helps build real, lasting connections.

It’s not about putting on a show

it’s about being the best version of yourself every time.

Keith Ferrazzi nails it in Never Eat Alone:

"The currency of real networking is not greed but generosity."

In other words, keep following up and showing genuine interest in people, and those first impressions will turn into solid, long-term relationships.

Quick Tips for Making a Great First Impression

  1. Be Present: Focus on the person you’re with. It shows you care and that you’re genuinely interested. (PUT THE PHONE AWAY!!!)
  2. Positive Body Language: Stand tall, smile, and keep your body open. It makes you approachable and trustworthy. (STAY AWAY FROM CROSSED ARMS AND HANDS IN POCKETS)
  3. Be Genuine: Ask good questions and really listen. Leil Lowndes in How to Talk to Anyone says mastering small talk is key to making a connection that sticks. (SMALL TALK IS OK, BUT YOU WANT TO MOVE THE NEEDLE!)
  4. Say Thanks: A simple “thank you” goes a long way in making someone feel appreciated.

Stephen Covey’s got a great tip in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People:

"Seek first to understand, then to be understood."

Listening more than you talk is a game-changer—not just for first impressions, but for all interactions. (I THINK WE ALL NEED SOME HELP HERE!)

Why Positive Impressions Matter

Every interaction is an opportunity to leave a positive mark. A solid first impression can lead to new opportunities, friendships, and collaborations.

Plus, when you put out good vibes, it’s contagious—others will want to do the same.

Karen Kang says in Branding Pays,

"Your brand is your public face."

How you present yourself—consistently—can create a ripple effect that influences how people see and remember you.

Your face tells many stories... what kind of stories is yours telling today?

Make Every Impression Count

Let’s make it a point to leave a positive impression every time. By focusing on the impact of our interactions, we can turn everyday moments into something special.

Share your thoughts or drop some tips in the comments—let’s keep each other motivated to make every moment count!
